What is Roulette?

American Roulette Rules and Gameplay

American roulette has both a single zero (0) and a double zero (00), as well as the numbers 1-36 on the wheel, giving a total of 38 pockets. That extra zero bumps up the house edge to 5.26%, which makes it the less-favoured choice of people looking to stretch their bankroll as far as possible.

Still, American Roulette has its fans - especially those who like the fast-paced vibe and the unique five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) called the Top Line or Basket Bet.

European Roulette Rules and Gameplay

European Roulette is often seen as the 'standard' version, and for good reason. With just one zero and 36 other numbers, the wheel has 37 pockets in total. That simple change (removing the double zero) drops the house edge to 2.7%. 

If you’re looking to stretch out your bankroll and keep things simple at the same time then European roulette is the best choice. 

French Roulette Rules and Special Bets

French Roulette uses the same exact wheel as European Roulette. This means the house edge is the same: 2.7%. But, there are two rules at play in French roulette that drop the house edge even further when they’re in play: 1.35% on even money bet. These rules are the La Partage and En Prison rule, which we’ll come to very shortly.

As well as these rules, French Roulette also offers a racetrack layout for call bets, these all have french names, and add to the complexity of the game. Let’s take a look at racetrack bets and these specific rules in more detail.

What are Racetrack Bets in Roulette?

The racetrack is called the racetrack, because it looks just like one! It’s used all the time in French roulette and often European roulette too. There are are four main types of racetrack bet:

• Voisins du Zéro: Covers 17 numbers that sit near zero on the wheel.
• Tiers du Cylindre: Covers 12 numbers on the opposite side of the wheel.
• Orphelins: Covers the 8 ‘orphan’ numbers that don’t belong to the other two groups.
• Neighbours: A flexible bet that lets you cover a chosen number plus its neighbours on either side.

If you’re the type of player who enjoys wheel-based strategy rather than just betting on red or black, racetrack bets are a fun addition.

La Partage and En Prison Rules Explained

These two French rules only apply to even-money bets (like red/black or odd/even), and they’re great for keeping losses down when the ball lands on zero.

• La Partage: If you’ve made an even-money bet and the ball lands on zero, you get half your stake back. Not ideal, but better than losing it all!
• En Prison: Your even-money bet stays “in prison” for one more spin if zero hits. If your bet wins on the second spin, you get your full stake back - no profit, but no loss either.

Both rules help give you a fighting chance, and together they’re part of what makes French Roulette the most player-friendly variant out there.

Roulette Odds, Payouts, and Probability

All of the maths in roulette comes in the payout table. Some bets are safer (known as outside bets), while others are much riskier (known as inside bets) but come with bigger payouts. Below you’ll find a quick guide to the most common roulette bets and their payouts.

Straight-Up Roulette Bet (One Number)

Pays 35:1. This is the riskiest bet on the table with odds of hitting it on a European wheel at 1 in 37. When playing new variants like Quantum Roulette or Lightning Roulette, this is the only bet where you can make use of the additional multipliers.

Split Bet (Two Numbers)

Pays 17:1. You place your chip on the line between two numbers, giving you double the chances compared to a straight-up bet.

Street Bet (Three Numbers)

Pays 11:1. This covers a row of three numbers and is quite a nice middle ground between risk and reward.

Corner Bet (Four Numbers)

Pays 8:1. Put your chip at the intersection where four numbers meet and you’ve got a roughly 11% chance of winning.

Line Bet (Six Numbers)

Pays 5:1. Two adjoining rows of numbers give you six chances to win.

Column and Dozen Bets

Pays 2:1. You’re betting on a group of 12 numbers. You’ve got roughly a 32.4% chance of winning on a European wheel, which isn’t bad at all!

Even-Money Bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low)

Pays 1:1. These are your best odds on the table (outside of those French rules), but don’t forget about that pesky zero - it tips the odds ever so slightly in the house’s favour.

Best Roulette Bonuses & Promotions

Choosing the right roulette variant and considering using a roulette strategy or system are both good ways to keep your bankroll going for longer. But the best way? It’s probably to claim a casino bonus.

Fibonacci System Explained

The Fibonacci System is  perfect if you’ve not quite got the bankroll that the Martingale strategy requires. This relies on the famous Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and so on), where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers.

• If you win: move backward two steps
• If you lose: move forward one step

This helps you to manage your losses without dramatically increasing your bets like Martingale. It’s ideal if you prefer cautious play and have a moderate bankroll.

Labouchere Roulette Betting System

The Labouchere system is also known as the cancellation system. It’s a bit more complicated than the other two, but does add a bit of flexibility.

• Write down a sequence of numbers that add up to your desired profit. 
• Your first bet is the sum of the first and last numbers in your sequence.
• If you win, you cross out these numbers and move inward. 
• If you lose, you add your lost bet amount to the end of the sequence. 
• The process continues until you cross off all numbers, achieving your target profit. 

This strategy is super customisable, so it works for all bankrolls but you need to pay close attention to your numbers.
